Active Intruder / Shooter Training

Why the Run - Hide - Fight Model May Not be Enough

According to Gun Violence Archive there have been 630 mass shootings in 2023. We cannot predict where an active shooter will strike next, but we can look to recent events and statistics for indications. Active shooter events most commonly occur in churches and schools.

Such incidents can occur anywhere and at any time, which is why knowing some key active shooter statistics will help you better prepare your organization. It is also important to note that Active Intruders have historically stopped their attack as soon as they have been met with EFFECTIVE resistance.

That is why getting training from a reputable source is critical. Just talking about skills or reading about skills or just hiring local security won’t get it done. It is also why the basic Run-Hide-Fight model may not be enough to protect your people. You must have training that goes beyond this model with professionals that can help you create the mental overlays and physical/mental balance to effectively protect your organization. You also can not expect the police or security to handle the situation for you. Everyone needs to be trained on how to react and survive.

As members of a civilized society, we are conditioned to believe that our homes, offices, schools, public areas, etc., are inherently safe. And when we hear the broadcasters on the television screen break news of a violent tragedy, we are understandably horrified. We are reminded of the very real dangers in this world. But for many people, it doesn’t seem to truly register with us that the people affected by the tragedy are no different than us.

Most churches, schools, and businesses have policies in place outlining responses to different types of crises. Every business follows fire codes, and many have a response plan in place for critical incidents such as a bomb threat. The same concept of writing policies, creating a plan, training staff, and then practicing these procedures does not apply to an active shooter, threat, or disgruntled employee as it should.

When it comes to having a security response plan in place for an active shooter situation, violence training must go beyond paper plans. Emergency plans must be created and physically practiced in order to prevent or counter an attack.

What Sets Our Active Shooter Training Apart?

Integrated Defense Group has created training courses specific to active shooter scenarios that go well beyond the standard run, hide, or fight playbook. Proper response tactics for an active intruder require an analysis of your own abilities, the environment where the violence is occurring, the presence of help, and the attackers weapons and tactics. We strive to provide our clients the most up to date, leading edge training available for active shooter situations in churches, schools, businesses, and hospitals. Every organization has it own unique situation and we will work to customize a solution that will give you the most protection possible.

Our Active Threat Response Program is a comprehensive, in-depth training program that will fit the need of any organization.  Our program provides lecture-based training combined with hands on real-life simulations. This is important to help you develop the skills and confidence to defend yourself against an active shooter.

The active shooter training program has 6 tiers and is offered in 3-steps:

  1. Program Lecture

  2. Interactive Workshops: Practical and Simulation.

  3. Confidential Security Review

The six tiers of our program.

  • Situational Awareness

  • Behavioral Analysis

  • Conflict De-escalation

  • Threat / Crisis Management

  • Immediate Action

  • Tactical Trauma Response

We encourage all organizations to assess their current safety procedures and preparedness. And if you need the insight of experts, Integrated Defense Group is here to help your group challenge themselves through our assessment and training.

We also provide specific training to your security personal or law enforcement officers on how to properly and effectively handle an active intruder situation, including proper engagement, de-escalation, counter attack and room clearing.

Step I: How to Survive an Active Shooter - Lecture (2 Hours)

Participants will learn proven techniques on how to survive an active shooter taught by a security expert and professional instructor. This training is designed for civilians and private sector professionals to increase their personal resiliency and the likelihood of surviving an incident before the police arrive. Additional information regarding statistics pulled from FBI and related reports will be discussed to support developing the threat profiles for suspicious persons. Threat response topics include: how to escape during an incident, how to barricade and lock down, how to report to law enforcement, and how to fight back using improvised weapons, if necessary. By the end of the lecture, participants will have a thorough understanding of how active shooter incidents begin and evolve.

Step II: How to Survive an Active Shooter - Lecture w/ Demos (4 Hours)

The second level workshop includes everything from Level 1 and then students will learn how to deploy the concepts taught during their active shooter program lecture in an environment that will test their skills and thought processes, challenging them to react faster under stressful situations. Participants will experience simulated scenarios in their own environment (school, workplace, etc.) in which they will be forced to think on their feet using the tools and techniques they’ve learned to survive should they ever find themselves in this situation.

Step III: Active Threat Response Workshop (1-Day)

The Active Threat Response Workshop is our most comprehensive option. It is a full 1-day training designed to provide staff the confidence needed in order to protect and defend themselves and possibly others; in the event of an intruder, active shooter, or other violent attack. The program includes everything from Level I and II including an interactive lecture, practical application, and scenario-based exercise model.

Participants will learn proven techniques on how to survive an active shooter taught by a professional instructor. This active shooter training is designed for civilians and private sector professionals to increase their personal resiliency and the likelihood of surviving an incident before the police arrive. By the end of this course, participants will have a thorough understanding of how active shooter incidents evolve by interpreting their individual threat profiles.

Participants will be able to practice responding with their new knowledge through our Active Shooter Simulation that is part of the Level III Workshop:

Participants will experience simulated scenarios in their own environment (school, workplace, etc.) in which they will be forced to think on their feet using the tools and techniques they’ve learned to survive when the bullets start flying. This kind of training is as real as it gets.

This program includes additional information regarding pre-incident indicators, workplace violence, and terrorism. This program challenges participants to make split second decisions that could be the difference between life and death. Students will learn how to deploy the concepts taught during this active shooter course in a simulated environment with gunmen that will test their skills and thought processes, challenging them to react faster under stressful situations. This kind of training is as real as it gets.

This active shooter training is designed for individuals from the public and private sector. The goal of this training is to establish a baseline reaction as a victim to active shooter incidents, retrain the instinctual reactions, and offer practical solutions to countering the threat.
